Photographer's Note
The 3 fortresses of Ayaz Kala rise dramatically on the edge of the Kizilkum Desert at different points between the fourth century B.C. and the seventh century A.D. as a means of protection from nomad raids. They were abandoned for 1,300 years, and only rediscovered in the 1940s. They have suffered much over time due to their mud construction but they have now been listed as a World Monuments so a watch is being kept on them.
The fortress in this photo is in better condition than the much higher one that I took the photo from. To the right of the fortress you can see the remains of other structures.
