Suburb of Paradise III, a photo from Phuket, South

Photographer's Note

In July 2010 I had been attending a conference in Phuket, Thailand. One day when I was free from the conference, I took a one-day excursion boat trip around the Andaman Sea, visiting Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay, Bamboo Island, and Monkey Island. The highly salty water is as clean and pristine as one would hope Paradise would also feature. I went swimming, gorging on spicy Thai food, and shooting photos at abandon.

The scene is Maya Bay on the Thai Island of Phi Phi Leh, a veritable Suburb of Paradise. What is ironic is that just 13 years ago Phuket was rendered into a suburb of hell by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The unimaginably beautiful scenery served as the location for the 2000 Leonardo di Caprio film, “The Beach.” The 1974 James Bond film, "The Man with the Golden Gun," was shot in Ko Tapu, Phang Nga Bay, Phuket, not far from Phi Phi Leh.

The photo shows a traditional boat powered by a fairly large motor. Along with these traditional boats, one sees the modern boats powered by as many as five outboard engines, each rated at 250 HP. Please, see an earlier photo I posted, "Horse Power." Thai boat owners appear to have a fixation on high powered boats, considering how many other boats with similar engines were on display.

Nice angle and positioning you did get. By appraoching from front to this tiny boat, you creates so fantatsic output in the last paradise. Is this island near from James Bond rock islnad where I was there 20 years ago?

The exceptional earth formation gave this place a superior glory, the sight is awesoem. Most times, so I heard, temp. can climb to upper 30th - so paradise must be a hot place, I reckon.

The colors and light are very pleasant and you have shot this view to give a great prominence to the front of the boat, which looks amusingly over-dimensioned. The famous steep rocks create a fine background.

I really like this photograph.
The viewpoint is unusual, yet it captures the colourful decoration and the imposing beauty of the prow. Set against the rock, it is almost demanding more attention than this gargantuan of Nature.
You have truly defined the beauty of this place!

Good choice to use this DOF. Both foreground are worth to be seen and a blurred background would have violated that idea. Also very attractive is the colour-diversity in the large shapes: dark green of the rock, soft green of the water and the blue sky behind.

Water on this shallow sand beach looks very clear and bright. Such high islands look just great and you made a good choice when you picked up this traditional boat as a foreground item. I wonder what's that darker spot near the right edge.

Are you serious? 250 HP, why on earth would the boat need such a large amount! thats what i call overkill! yikes.

seeing your photo and reading the note makes me want to re book a trip here again :) Good for you to take the day off and take advantage of the local area. looks great.

this is such a beautiful composition here! The water has such eye catching light green color tone! The boat contributes interesting shape and by the way you composed it makes the geometry very attractive.
The background is stunning!
I like also the inscriptions in the foreign alphabet which adds a local and exotic touch.

This place is really paradise, the water is so clear that sometimes the boat even seems to be flying! You captured it from a great POV, and I really like the inclusion of this interesting mountain in the background! Excellent colors, sharpness and depth! Wonderful composition of a wonderful place!

The distance between the boat and the horizon is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showimg the details of the boat and of the rocky island. The good luminosity is making the colours to stand out. Have a nice day.
