Pack Mules of the Himalayas, a photo from Gandaki, West

Photographer's Note

In the foothills of the Himalayas, in many areas at least, the only way to transport heavy goods, is by Mule, or often by Human power. In this photo, the mules are empty, and returning from their destination. As a tourist treking on the Annapurna Circuit, crossing paths with the pack-mules, is a daily multiple occurrence.

Hi Steve,

This shot brought back a lot of memories for me. I remember hearing the tinkling of the mules' bells as they came down the trail in the pre dawn when I was on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. I see a couple of the mules are wearing what look like muzzles - those wire contraptions. When you get up really high you don't see the mules any more, only human pack animals. At least that was the case on my trek.

I like this shot too because there is no human in evidence.

A very attractive scene. I like the way the bright red headgear contrasts with the browns and greens of the rest of the photo. It captures what looks like the weary, resigned plodding of the animals. The DOF is good and the light used to great effect.

This surely is a travel scene... Well captured in a fine composition. The decorations on the animal's heads provides a special accent.
