Photographer's Note

One more photo from my archive. I still can post some older pics before a new supply :).

Nyaung Shwe is a town a few kilometers north of Inle Lake in the Shan State. It is the tourist hub for visiting nearby Inle Lake. Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery is just a short walk north of the town and is well-known by photographers for its unique oval-shape windows which serve as eye-catching frames when novice monks stand to look out. It’s over 150 years old and sits on sturdy stilts. Living there of course, are monks, but most are boys in training, here to learn about their religion and to see if they might fit into the monk lifestyle. Most of the monks have a cat as pet.

Of course, in the evening, I went there to make such a shot. But the monks, instead of learning and posing from these oval windows, were busy with shaving and washing and they have fun with it. They saw me walking around with my camera, but paid no attention. But finally, when I asked, some boys went into the monastery and stood in the windows. But it was already rather dark and the photos were not good.
