Photographer's Note

This was a summer school in a monastery located in the hills one hour drive from Kyaing Tung. Quite close, you can meet Khun tribes.

From March to May, schools are normally closed for vacation but in some monasteries, monks are trying to share their knowledge to young pupils and teach them alphabet, reading, writing or even litterature.

In this Shan province, the buddhist authorities had to chose in 1991 between preserving the Shan litterature and preserving the royal palace of Kyaing Tung. The palace located close in the heights of Kyaing Tung was partially destroyed and turned into an hotel.

Not really the best context so that the youth gets a a proper education and a decent job. Luckily, some young people like this monk spend their time to share their knowledge.

When we arrived in that monastery, the pupils were divided in 4 groups of 15-20 kids in the shadow of the local pagoda. the younger were drawing, the second group was repeating words shown by the monks, the third one was copying words and the oldest ones were following carefully what this monks was writing on the board.
