Photographer's Note

The guide realized I would wish to skirt the crowd filling the corridor leading to the Buddha image. There is an elaborate gold-coloured archway that precedes the platform supporting the image, so we walked around the outside to reach it. This particular gold image is believed to have been only one of five likenesses cast during the Buddha's lifetime. Historical evidence suggests, however, that it was probably cast in bronze in 146CE, five centuries after his death.
