Photographer's Note

A family of Ubian in a dugout, going through a narrow mangrove channel. The Ubian, an ethnic seaborne race generally found along the shore of the west coast of Sabah, is a distant cousin to the Sea Bajau, usually found living on lepa lepa along the east coast and islands of Sabah.

While the Sea Bajau until recently nomadic, the Ubian was never. They lived by the coast in fishing villages, and only venture far out to sea to their Kilongs ( a stockade type fish trap far out at sea) and Bagangs ( very big boat usually anchored far out at sea for deep sea fishing).
