It certainly is polluting the air, but farmers in Malaysia's rice bowl Kedah do it all the time: After harvesting the paddy they will burn the rice straw on the fields. By doing so, they think, they will destroy all the harmful bugs and at the same time fertilize the soil for the next paddy planting season.

Despite the odds some insects survive the slash and burn season like this red dragonfly, as there still are the irrigation canals.
