Photographer's Note

There are many villages on the banks of the Mekong, where the people make every use possible of the fertile land and the fruits of the river. About halfway through our river journey to Don Khong in Si Phan Don, we stopped at a Lowland Lao village called Hokhao at the top of the cliffs. The people were out in force to meet us. It was the only village where I had noticed the children had any kind of toys. Most of the villagers are self sufficient here and it was no surprise that toys were homemade. In this photo I like the charming way the elder sister is playing with her brother. In fact in all the villages we visited there were many examples of young girls child-minding.
