Photographer's Note

Portrait of beautiful Hmong farm girl, taken at Phathao Hmong village 7km north of Vang Vieng. Here I was not only attracted to the bright colors of her head dress which really standout against the dark space, but above all I was simply mesmerized by her tender look, almost an intimate look into the world of the Hmong

The Hmong people are ethnic Miao Chinese driven south through Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma who have lived in the mountains and hills of Southern China and Southeast Asia for thousands of years, though the Hmong have never had their own country. In the 1970s, many Hmong were recruited by the United States to help them fight the Laotian and Vietnamese Communists. Hundreds of thousands of Hmong have since left Southeast Asia and nearly two hundred thousand Hmong now live in the US.

Clearly not one of your random shots from the hip this time, but a very carefully mastered portrait. The girl's face has a beautiful natural freshness and her head dress is astonishing. You found her, or placed her, in a perfect setting where the dark background serves to accentuate the relative paleness of her face. She looks into the camera with a kind of innocent self-confidence. It is a very well balanced and well cropped composition and I also like the light brown piece of wood on the right side.

This is a great portrait and as you say a look into these people's world. The off centre placing works perfectly allow the dark area to beautifull alance the bright colors. Thanks for the interesting note too, that is a huge movement of people.
I do see what you mean about the girls tender look, but as I study her, I feel there is a tiniest amount of hostility too. For me it makes the picture even more intriguing.

This is a fine portrait with a very interesting head piece shown. My personal preference would be a little breathing space above the girl's head and a little less saturation in the reds. I like the colors and patterns of her head dress.
