‘Vang Vieng - On the banks of the Nam Song River’

Time to show what Vang Vieng looks like on the ground floor.
I had previously written that it’s certainly not a beautiful town. However, Malgo wrote that when she was there in 2003 it was a very quiet nice village.
Today, however Vang Vieng looks like a place that has suddenly grown very strongly with quite a lot of ugly new constructions.
Right in the middle of the town is a huge empty place, a former runway, left by the Americans after the Vietnam war.

This former runway is now mostly deserted excepted a few trucks that are parked there. Sometimes you can find there some market stalls and other parts of it look like a rubbish dump.
I often had to cross this runway from downtown Vang Vieng to my hotel at the other side and I remember the pungent smell the place had.
Still, Vang Vieng is not an uncomfortable place to stay. There are many good budget hotels and also some places that bear the name 'resort'. Usually the latter offer modern bungalows around a garden with swimming pool … and at attractive prices.
In terms of restaurants, there’s a lot of choice. Even in an ugly place you can live comfortably.

Vang Vieng is elongated and the Nam Song River flows on the western side. The banks of this river look completely different from the rest of the town. Quite picturesque, this is the part where you most want to be.

And the real reason to go to Vang Vieng is the surrounding nature.
If you don’t want to take a balloon flight, you can hike in the beautiful surroundings with the karst mountains or make trips by tuk-tuk to explore the region further afield.
You can also climb some of the peaks as you see them in this photo. You don't have to be a mountaineer, but it does take some effort.
Finally, Vang Vieng is also known for kayaking and tubing in the river.
