I found this in the middle of the road, within the borders of Kawabehataya (a constituent of Akita city), near a wonderful family-run English Tearooms.

In the middle of the tarmac road is a small hole, about 20cm in diameter, that's been neatly cut out. Inside it is this small bush.

Was the plant there before the road was laid? Perhaps they found it, and for whatever reason decided not to destroy it. Maybe its a rare type of plant?
Rather than dig it out and plant it elsewhere, or just destroy the plant, they decided to carefully build the road around this strange little bush.

A little example of the Japanese respect for nature.
