Humanity, culture and tradition...

While menfolk were out tending their farms, this generations of 'Manggarai' extended families happily gathered for a photo shoot in a heavily shaded doorway of their two hundred year old traditional cone shaped
house in Todo village, West Manggarai district. Located at 1200 elevation, this remote village is tucked in beautiful lush mountain greenery in a fresh crisp cool air. They are predominantly Catholic, being the dominant ethnic group in central highland of Western Flores, rich in culture and a great majority of them still practice traditional way of life influenced by animistic belief following in the steps of their forefathers.

Their laid back way of life and tradition remain unaffected, unconcerned by the passage of time at least for now...

Setting: 19 mm, 1/60 sec, F5.6, ISO Raw 200, 0754 hrs

Hello Abmdsudi,

It is very surprising to learn that villages are able to follow a traditional way of life, unaffected by modern trends, despite the advancement of technology. (Maybe there has been a little influence, as the children are wearing modern, cartoony t shirts.)

The family is stood in a dark setting, which might not have been the best place, for you, but it does create a very insular setting.

The decorated wood is remarkably beautiful, with intricate swirling patterns, resembling decorative curtains.

Good to see someone with a laid back way of life in this crazy world of ours. How I envy them with the simplistic living. They have no idea how busy the outside world really is. Reminds me of the Amish here in America. Nice portrait from your part of the world.

A fantastic family portrait, the silvery light makes them stand out so well from the darkness inside. You included the beautiful wood carvings really well in the composition, too. Superb level of sharpness and clarity.

beautiful picture of this family living like in the old times. Attractive for the photographers, hopefully, they appreciate it too. Nice decorative wooden panel. I was on Flores one year ago but only in Labuan Bajo.

Hello Abmdsudi, several generations of the family gathered here for this shot. Maybe some are shy, as they are not all looking at you. Not an easy light but we can see all their faces quite clearly.
The beautifully decorated door makes an alternative focal point.
A strong composition.

This is a work with a large family, I think it is the largest portrait you have done with 8 members, it is a magnificent portrait as always and they stand out very well against the black background, very interesting what those panels carved in wood and that we see to the left of the family.
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly managed factors, in this beautiful image.

Missed this one. It was a pleasure opening this because the elaborate, decorative woodcarving was not apparent in the thumbnail. The family group portrait at right is excellent, with perfect lighting, sharpness and exposure. Tfs!
