Photographer's Note

Of all the numerous temples on Bali, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan (temple on lake Bratan) is my favourite. Thie setting is extraordinary, with the temple standing on two small islands of the volcanic lake. The place is marvellous at any time, but it is best to visit during one of the frequent celebrations held there, as there is plenty of action to see then.

The temple dates back to 17th century and is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the waters. It is one of nine directional temples of Bali - it is the highest rank of temples on Bali. The highest rank of the temple is confirmed by the height of the main tower (meru) - it has 11 levels, which is the highest number that Balinese temples have.
