Photographer's Note

While joining patrol with the waterpolice in the Banggai archipelago we talked about the tsunami in Aceh.
To my surprise they told me about a similar event that had happened here in May 2000.
An earthquake had triggered a tsunami that caused devestation around the coastlines and small islands here.
A few day's later they brought me to this place, off the Southern coast of Pulau Peleng.
This is what's left of a once large Bajo (seagypsy) settlement, which was build on stilts on top of a shallow reef about a Kilometer offshore.
A now abandoned Mosque is all that remained, inbetween the rotten remains of the stilts. The rest was wiped away by the wave.
Dozens of people died here. The survivors were relocated closer to the shore where they have build a new village. Beeing Bajo's they didn't want to live on land so their new village was again build on stilts offshore.
You can see a glimps of it in the distance. (right corner of the picture)
