Photographer's Note

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal.

After getting up at stupid o'clock in the morning for the drive from Bharatpur to Agra, it looked like we might miss the sunrise over the Taj Mahal as our driver got progressively more lost.
The day was saved when we asked a rotund man on a bike for directions, and we followed him as he pedalled furiously in front, arriving at last on the banks of the Yamuna River.

With this shot I wanted to contrast the sublime arcitecture of the Taj with the reality of it's surroundings. Not too much reality, just a small strip of the rubbish-strewn river bank. What's that red thing, a used condom?
Of course, you'd find similar detritus on the banks of any river in a big European city, and nothing could detract from such beauty, especially at this time of day when even the mounds of camel dung take on an attractive golden hue.
