Photographer's Note

Caretaker at Alchi gompa.

Unlike the other gompas in Ladakh, which follow the Tibetan pattern of siting the monasteries in an elevated and commanding position, the one at Alchi is hidden down in the valley near the river. Another difference is that the Buddhist art inside follows the Kashmiri rather than the Tibetan tradition found at Ladakh's other monasteries.

Some of you may remember this shot that I posted last year. This is the same old caretaker who I photographed in the dark interior of one of the temples, and after walking back outside into the bright sunshine I photographed him again with my other camera. He really did have a lot of style - those shades, that hat... He knew how to pose too!
The light wasn't the best for portraiture, harsh and contrasty, and that wooden post growing out of his head - what was I thinking?! Despite these technical limitations I've always liked this shot, and I'd be interested to hear your opinions...

Alternative black and white version in the workshop.
