Photographer's Note

Narikuravar or Vaagri community (Indian Gypsy) originally belong to the nomadic / indigenous tribes. They have a distinct culture that has been passed from generation to generation and they live by their own rules. The main occupation of the people to earn money is hunting birds and animals. But as they were prohibited to entry into the forests to pursue this livelihood, they were forced to take up other alternatives such as selling beaded ornaments or picking metal scrap to survive. Narikuravar women migrate from place to place to find a market for their handmade beaded jewellery or collect metal scrap. I have captured this picture in Chennai suburb area. This woman engaged in picking metal scrap.

I would typically regard the blown-out highlights in the background as a flaw -- but in this instance, they serve to tell the viewer that the background is unimportant, that we should focus our attention on the woman who is the subject of the foto.
