Kerala - Kovalam - Fishing village or holiday resort

Kovalam means ‘grove of coconut tree’ and indeed, there are many coconut trees.
Along its 17 km coastline it has three beaches that are separated by rocky outcroppings. The three beaches form together the crescent of Kovalam Beach.
On one of these rocky outcroppings there’s a lighthouse that you can visit and this picture was taken on top of that lighthouse.

Already a few years ago, Gert was in Kovalam when it was still an attractive fishing village.
Today two beaches see a lot of tourists: Indian visitors and foreigners and you will find there lots of hotels, restaurants and cafes. There are certainly still fishermen and you can still see fishing boats on the beaches. But those two bays do have the appearance and atmosphere of a resort place.

A lot of Westerners seem to enjoy it there. I liked Varkala more, another place by the sea of which I have already shown some pictures.
However, when you leave the centre of Kovalam, you arrive in a more interesting environment, at least more interesting for me. See two photos in the WS.

And then of course there is the authentic fishing village Vizhinjam that’s a stone's throw from Kovalam.
I walked from Kovalam to Vizhinjam and returned by auto rickshaw (tuk tuk). Pictures of this fishing village will follow.
