Photographer's Note

This photo may leave some of you frustrated, because I don't know what it shows or exactly where it was taken. All I know is that it's from Allahabad, a major city in Uttar Pradesh state in northern India, where I spent a couple of days in November 1991 on a journey from Bombay on the west coast to Calcutta in the northeast.

I carefully searched my diary for any information about this photo, but found nothing. On the Google map I can see a small lake by a temple, so maybe that's where I was. But even if this photo doesn't fill the TE purpose of teaching members about the world, I post it just because I find it nice and colourful and fairly typical of any place in India.

Allahabad is famous for a religious festival called Kumbh Mela, which rotates between four cities, taking place in each one every 12 years. In Allahabad it mainly involves bathing at the confluence of the sacred rivers Yamuna and Ganges and the mythological river Sarasvati on the outskirts of the city.

It is also the home town of the legendary Nehru family, whose large villa is now a museum.

I know where I took the photos in the WS. I also know for sure that they were all scanned from Kodachrome slides.
