BhimaKali Temple, Sarahan, a photo from Himachal Pradesh, North

Photographer's Note

Pictured above is the Bhimakali temple in the Himachali town of Sarahan around 180 kms. away from the capital city of Shimla. It is dedicated to Mother Goddess Bhimakali the presiding deity for the Bushahr rulers. Bhimakali is another manifestation of Parvati or Sati the divine consort of Lord Shiva.
Made of wood and stone the temple is a fine example of Himachali architecture. The carvings on the wood is magnificent. One strange fact is that unlike other temples in India, the deity is located on the uppermost tier of the temple. Devotees have to climb narrow wooden stairs to reach the top. Photography inside the temple is prohibited.

This is a remarkable building, showing the characteristic features of the east. I'm so glad you were able to include a figure in your shot, for it confirms the scale.

Hi Subho,
Wow, what a place! This reminds me of palaces of ancient legends, as you say the carvings in the wood are fit for a Goddess. You captured this from an angle that the light has lightened beautifully, showing those carvings in wonderful relief. The shape of the buildings is fascinating too, something I would never see. Presented against this beautiful blue sky, this is a unique and magical place.

Good closeup of the fine temple, which I had marvelled seeing with my own eyes. The workmanship on wood is amazing & the typical Kinnauri style architecture is beautiful.

I am sure you know that the alternate wood and stone layers in buidling structures used typically in these areas is for earthquake resistance...
