Photographer's Note

This is just a snapshot really. I spotted this interesting pair in the square outside the Mahabodi temple. I noticed the sad, whistful expression of the old lama and the keen determined look of his young novice. One is maybe dreaming of a time before he was driven from his homeland by the Chinese invasion; the other with his eyes determinedly fixed on the future. They seemed to represent the past and the future of the Tibetan people. The line came to my mind “Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.” I thought that it was Shakespeare, but it appears that it comes from the Jewish scriptures.
The old man will never see his homeland free again,I fear, but I wonder if the novice ever will. Will he be one who will preserve the dreams, heritage and culture of the Tibetan people? I hope so
