Photographer's Note

China is a unified nation consists of fifty-six different ethnic groups that make up the great Chinese national family, and The Bai is one of the more prominent minorities in Yunnan Province. With a population of about 2 million, eighty percent of them live around Dali Bai Autonomous Region, Yunnan Province, whilst the rest can be found in neighboring Guizhou (Bijie area) and Hunan (Sangzhi area) provinces.

The traditional clothing of the Bai ethnic group is very colorful, and unique to their minority group. The favorite color of both men and women is white. They believe that white represents dignity and high social status, and this can be seen in their clothes. It is typical for men to wear white outer upper garments and white trousers. Women have more choices of colors. They like to wear white, light blue or pink outer upper garments and rosy, purple or black waistcoats. The clothing is usually adorned with camellia flowers because they view these flowers as a symbol of beauty. They also like to wear a red scarf on their shoulders, a combination that resembles blooming camellias. The hair is usually tied with a red rope and wrap it with colorful decoration and the most prominent is the rainbow-colored headdress.
