Photographer's Note
Hongcun is an exceptionally well preserved traditional village in southern Anhui. Together with neighbouring Xidi, it has been listed by UNESCO as world heritage.
In harmony with the natural environment, Hongcun has developped using the geomantic principles of Feng Shui. The unusual layout of the village is in the shape of the Chinese character niu (bull) and there are many original residencies dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
The Huizhou style is the predominant architecture: white walls, dark tiles, horse-head gables, stone drums or mirrors and open interior courtyards are common features.
It is known as "A Village in Chinese Paintings" for its beautiful views and quietness. You may recognize it as the backdrop in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But actually, I think the village is better than the movie.
The best times to visit the village are early morning and late afternoon, as this town sees quite a lot of tour groups during the day. Contrary to what is written in many guidebooks, it is now perfectly possible to spend the night in Hongcun.

This picture was taken in the center of Hongcun. It shows the typical Huizhou architecture being reflected in Half Moon Pond, which is at the heart of the village.
