Photographer's Note
We were shooting a scene for a film in the slum of Kisenyi. We were starting to lose the light, and the mostly Ugandan crew started getting edgy... Kisenyi is not a place to be with expensive gear after dark. A large crowd was gathering behind our flagging tape barrier and around our vehicles. We had more scenes that we could have shot after dark, but the director and I agreed it would be best to get out before then. We left without incident.
I had snapped this shot of two children doing the dishes outside their shack of a home earlier that day, and later reflected that their expressions summed up the two moods of Kisenyi: friendly curiosity, and suspicion.

Hello Andrew,
What a wonderful National Geographic style photo. Incidentally, National Geographic published my last book, Leonardo's Universe, and I am working on a new book on Isaac Newton for the NGS. This will take me later this month to Cambridge, Woolsthorpe (in Lincolnshire), and the Royal Society in London. Last June my wife and I did an exploratory trip that took us to Oxford, where we saw many of the places where your grandfather lived and worked. He is still a presence in my own career, although I retired last year. Drop me a line at [email protected] if you get this message.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Andrew,
A great capture of everyday life in Kampala. The bits of blue and purple throughout the photo pull it all together.

hello andrew,
great grab, and shot like a documentary filmmaker. your statement of getting the story in one frame resonates with me (i'm also in the documentary film biz) -- too many filmmakers neglect to get shots like these while they're on location. so well done you, a very nice detail of everyday life. i also love how you note their expressions sum up the reactions of the local people to you and the crew.
