Photographer's Note

A silhouette of a young girl in Togo, wandering the village.

Sadly in Togo, child slavery and forced labor is all too real. It is estimated that in 2006 over 300,000 children in Togo were living in conditions of slavery. That's more than the population of many cities! Some times a parent cannot afford to feed the whole family, so they sell a child. Other times, the parents are told their child will work in another town and send money back to the family, only the child is never seen again.

In this photo, the girl is safe in her village, but it reminds me of all the faceless children in Togo who are in the shadows of slavery right now.
