Island in the sky, a photo from Highland, Scotland

Photographer's Note

Loch an Eilean is located a couple of miles south of Aviemore in the Cairngorm National Park. On the island are the ruins of a 14th century castle. This was used as a place of safety by the locals when the reivers (thugs & cattle thieves) came calling.
I like the way the reflection of the clouds in the water gives the impression of an island floating above the water. (It looks like that to me anyway) :-)

Hi Keith,
A very good picture with three different parts; the close part where you can see the bottgom clearly, the part of the lake where the clouds are reflected and finally the grenn background. A marvellous reflection of the hills is the perfectly calm water. A very good picture indeed !

Fantastic reflection and incredibly clean and transparent water of the lake! The castle, just visible through the vegetation makes it more attractive place! Beautiful sky reflected in the lake!

Hi Keith,
an excellent vertical framing, in a very well structured composition, in which you have played wisely with the beautiful landscape of the Highlands and its wonderful reflections on the lake, in order to obtain a beautiful mirror effect.
I like the transparency of the water in foreground, that it allows us to see the stones at the bottom of the lake.

Superb wide angle shot of this idyllic scenery with high sharpness and fine colour hues. The clarity of the water is impressive, as the stones can be seen clearly. DOF is perfect due to the use of the wide angle, making the viewer look from FG to BG.

One of the most breathtaking views shown here and the way the lake takes the eye right to all the right places and into those beautiful island eventually. Gorgeous. I love the colours, the contrasting foreground you've left in and the vast expanse. The mirror reflection in crystal water and everything seems to merge harmoniously. But water reflection imo, is obviously the focal point. A really very fine shot, Congrats

wonderful shot with nice perspective...like the reflection of the foliage in the water in BG...also like the textured stones under the water which is clearly seen from the top...nice calm water...

Superbly framed with amazing symmetrical reflections that do indeed make the island look like it is floating in the sky. I like the transparency and clarity of the fg water allowing us to count every stone on the bottom. Good sharpness and natural looking colour. Tfs!

Classically composed shot in many ways and a fitting title. Given that great reflection I might have cropped it further up to just focus on that alone and the clouds that look like layers on the water but that's my subjective viewpoint one that I think a moderator is there to judge from time to time!

An original shot, thanks to the contrast between the greenery and its reflection at BG, with the brown part of the pebbles in the water at FG, plus the gray reflection of the clouds

Hello Keith,

You really manage to create a surreal effect with this picture, with trees covering what really seems an island peacefully floating between the clouds!

The rocks in the foreground add depth to the overall composition. Sharp details, great exposure, and perfect DOF.

Hi Keith,
I see you stopped to upload a while ago. So pity. The composition here is brilliant all the elements so simple yet combined together result in a very impressive effect. Perfect 100% reflection is probably the highlight but there is also a well thought through foreground which also has some reflection of the cloudy sky.

Thanks for the tip with right clicking the large images. I noticed though that it did not work on the version of Internet Explorer 10 -but may be it was because we have a special version of it at work.

The reflections of the island contrast with the transparency f the water to give a very interesting image. Technically excellent as well - sharp and good color rendition.
