Photographer's Note

A Sunday morning on the Wild Coast.

Southern Africa is full of very interesting, synchretistic churches, which are broadly Christian, but also include features from indigenous African religions - such as the acceptance of ancestors as intercessors (in much the same way that many Christian groups will identify saints to intercede in the worshipper's behalf). Uniforms typically form a strong part of this worship (there is an earlier shot in my portfolio from Swaziland of a colourful blue and red uniform). A colleague of mine who spent a number of years in one of these churches comments that he has never danced so much and never used so much starch either before or since.

The simple, white uniform is also very popular and the photograph shows a preacher entering the sea in preparation for a baptismal ceremony for his flock.
