Photographer's Note

Back in 2010 I had a chance to spend almost one month in the state of Gombe, northern Nigeria, for a professional assignment. While the south of the country enjoys tropical weather, with prolific vegetation and abundant water, the north is semi-desertic and very dry. Temperatures of 50 degrees centigrade in the middle of the day were not that rare.

As I drove everyday close to a small farmer village, I decided one day to stop by in the late afternoon with my camera. Most of the people were still with the cattle out of the village, but children were there and were very excited by my unexpected visit. Although we had very little communication - they spoke a dialect and almost no english at all - we shared great moments and they all definitely loved being photographed and see themselves on screen.

This young girl ran away when she saw me with the camera, and came back to me minutes later with these colorful clothes and hat. The baby wasn't hers - probably a younger brother - she was proud to have him in her arms in front of the camera.
