Photographer's Note

December 18th 1958 is commemorated in the Republic of Niger as Republic Day, the national holiday. Although not the date of formal, complete independence from France, December 18 marks the founding of the Republic and creation of the Presidency of the Republic of Niger, following the constitutional changes of the French Fifth Republic, and the elections of 4 December 1958 held across The French Colonial possessions. Nigeriens consider this date to be the founding of their nation. Between December 18th, 1958 and August 4th, 1960, Niger remained a semi-autonomous Republic with in the French Community.
The 18th is celebrated in Niger with official festivals and appearances of political leaders, as well as public parties and festivities. The 50th anniversary celebrations were held in 2008, centered not in the capitol, but in the regional center of Tillabéry, and surrounded by sports, musical and arts competitions, the opening of new buildings, a National Youth Festival, and other public festivities.
The "anciens combattants" gave the better years of their life to fight for France against nazis but now they are retired with 100 € every six months...

Not the best quality but a good shot for TE and a very actual photodocument.An interesting note,too.

Après Areva, tu soulèves un deuxième scandale: la manière dont la France a traité et traite encore les habitants de ses anciennes colonies qui ont combattu pour elle. C'est une honte, d'autant plus qu'on les envoyait dans les zones de combats les plus dures. Mais c'est vrai que les français ne touchent pas beaucoup plus avec la retraite des anciens combattants...
Solidarité, fidélité... c'est beau sur un drapeau... ce serait mieux dans les actes!

Ciao Alberto,
forse manca un poco di nitidezza, ma la foto ha grande valore per quello che rappresenta, unitamente alla splendida nota che l'accompagna.
Un'occasione rara per conoscere realtà di una nazione e di un popolo che a noi sembra molto lontano, anche mnell'epoca della globalizzazione, e della quale conosciamo solo poche cose frammentarie.
Speriamo di risentirci prima, in ogni caso ti faccio i miei migliori auguri di buone feste.
