Photographer's Note

This picture was taken by an ATM machine (bank machine) in Quazarzate. The woman and child were sitting at a distance, when I noticed that they were 'begging', they had moved closer to the machine.

At this time, I froze noticing how STUNNING the little girl was. I asked to take a picture and in exchange provided them with some money. I realize that for some, taking a picture and exchanging it for money is not acceptable because we are creating beggars (I've been told this). Tourists create beggars!!

In a patriarchal country like Morocco (and many parts of the world) with patriarchal values, the fact that this woman and child was out on the street and begging was of great concern to me and a shock to me. Women are not typically seen doing this in Morocco. For this reason, alone I wanted to give them money, change, food...etc. In a system were the only reliable social security is YOUR family, of which it is governed and protected by a male figure--it was quite alarming to see a woman and child begging.
