Photographer's Note

In her comments to my last photo showing the famous mosque in Mopti, central Mali, Malgo asked me if a few persons dressed in blue clothes in the distance were Tuaregs. I replied that they probably were.

Tuaregs are a Berber people mainly living in the Sahara but also in wider areas around the desert. The tough living conditions in the desert have pushed them to the cities in search of jobs. They are often known as the "blue people", traditionally wearing indigo coloured clothes staining their skin.

I saw several Tuaregs in Mopti and discovered when looking at my archive that I had taken two photos. Here they are.

Reading my diary from this journey a few days ago I discovered that Tuareg men in Mopti had persistently annoyed me for offering to pose for photos – in a rather pushy way and for what I considered outrageous fees. I had completely forgotten that.

I had also forgotten that Mopti had become quite touristy. Large groups of mainly French tourists had found their way here. As an effect of that the posher restaurants were charging much more than even in Bamako and lots of children had developed a habit of pestering foreigners with demands for money or sweets.

While Mopti was generally nice, it was the only place I visited in Mali that was showing clear signs of becoming a tourist trap.

I can't say much about these photos. I just saw these two young men, both wearing the traditional dark blue turbans, in the port area of Mopti. I probably took the photo mainly for the heap of tightly rolled carpets on the shore – and maybe for the chance to take a photo of Tuaregs without paying, since they didn't notice me. I have no idea if there was any connection between the carpets and the men. Maybe they were just passing by.

I don't know if the men to the left were looking at the Tuaregs. Maybe they were looking at the pale stranger.

Another photo in the WS. They were both scanned from Kodachrome slides.
