Photographer's Note
One of the few remaining Wikalas (Caravanserais) in Cairo, the Wikala al-Bazara was a medieval merchants hostel; traders slep in the upper rooms while the ground floor rooms around the courtyard were used for storing goods and stabling animals.
There were once 360 wikalas in Cairo during Ottoman times, now less than 20 remain. This one has been fully restored, and the views from the roof (for a little baksheesh to the guard of course) are some of the best of Islamic Cairo.

Hi Julian.
I can say without a doubt that I really like this photograph. The contrast and sharpness is perfect, the exposure spot on. I think the Egyptian in the courtyard adds a great deal of balance and scale to the image. This could have been a vintage slide or scanned negative and I wouldn't have known the difference except it is so clean. Really beautiful job, Julian, you can be really proud of this one.
Congrats!

Hello Julian,
I like the historic mood of this photo, and the POV. It's great that you were able to capture that man in just the right spot. All of the lines and arches really create a lovely pattern, too.
