Photographer's Note

Ribeira Grande de Santiago, called "Old City", a World Heritage site, was founded in 1462 and was the first capital of the island of Santiago and the historical cradle of Cape Verde. It was the first city built by Europeans in sub-Saharan Africa has been a profitable point of the slave trade during that colonial period was the construction of numerous monuments of great cultural wealth.
Situated in the center of the Old City the pillory was built in 1512 and remains intact as a reminder of the difficult times of slavery in the punishment of slaves was there held
The Pillory represented the power of the "master over slave" its location in the central square is testimony to that served both for display and for sale of slaves, as well as place of punishment and penalties that were committed in the presence of other slaves so that they serve as an example.
