Photographer's Note

Ribeira Grande de Santiago, called "Old City", a World Heritage site, was founded in 1462 and was the first capital of the island of Santiago and the historical cradle of Cape Verde. It was the first city built by Europeans in sub-Saharan Africa has been a profitable point of the slave trade during that colonial period was the construction of numerous monuments of great cultural wealth.
Royal Fortress of Saint Philip is situated on the plateau at the entrance to historic Old City, and offers a magnificent view of the village.
The fortress was built in 1587, after two violent attacks (in 1578 and 1585) conducted by the English privateer Francis Drake.
