Default Locations: again :)

A few months ago (and not only then) I started a discussion about the problem of the many wrong locations. I read some other discussions about this and it seems like everyone can help to (partially) solve this problem. So I suggest to post the corrections (of a whole state) to be made on the forum, so that we can help the location administrators.

I'm working on the states of Peru (but I haven't got much time last weeks), so I post here the corrections to be made in the state of Amazonas, Peru.

Earth >> South America >> Peru >> North >> Amazonas :
- Move pictures from unexistent locations ‘Along the Amazon River’ and ‘near Iquitos’ to ‘Unknown’
- Change unexistent location ‘Belin’ into ‘Belén’
- Move pictures from wrong location ‘Inquitos’ to ‘Iquitos’
- Move pictures from wrong location ‘Manu’ to the province of ‘Manu’ in the state of ‘Madre de Dios’
- Move location ‘Puerto Maldonado’ to the state of ‘Madre de Dios’
- Move pictures from unexistent location ‘Tabaconas – Namballe Sanctuary’ to the province of ‘San Ignacio’ in the state of ‘Cajamarca’
- Change unexistent location ‘Kuelap Chachapoyas’ into ‘Chachapoyas’

I hope some of you will collaborate to this little 'project' :)

Greetings and have a nice week,
ThomasL

Here's the next peruvian state: Ancash.

Earth >> South America >> Peru >> North >> Ancash :
- Change ‘casma’ into ‘Casma’ (with a capital)
- Move pictures from unexistent location ‘Chavin’ (referring to ‘Chavín de Huantar’, an archeological site) to new location ‘Huari’
- ‘Conococha’ is the name of a lagoon situated between ‘Callejón de Huaylas’ and ‘Chiquián’, so maybe move it to ‘Unknown’ is the best solution
- ‘Cordillera Blanca’ and ‘Cordillera Huayhuash’ both are names of mountain ranges, so…
- Move pictures from unexistent location ‘Huahuash’ and location ‘Huayhuash’ to ‘Cordillera Huayhuash’ or ‘Unknown’
- Move pictures from unexistent location ‘Huraz (Piccup)’ to ‘Huaraz’
- Move pictures from ‘Inconnu’ to ‘Unknown’
- ‘Ishinka’ is the name of a mountain in the Andes, situated near Huaraz, so maybe move it to location ‘Huaraz’?
- ‘Laguna Jahuacocha’ is the name of a lagoon and ‘Pisco’ is the name of a mountain here. Pictures should be moved to ‘Huaraz’
- Change wrong location ‘Samanco Bay’ into ‘Samanco’

Hi Thomas,

I did the same with Martinique ( http://fr.trekearth.com/read.php?f=1&t=604531&m=834141&tt=flat ), spending a lot of time. Few days after all was OK (thanx to Vivianne) someone posted 3 picts with stupid location again...

This will have no end while everything can be written in the location field. WE NEED CLOSED LIST, once for all. I think those lists of every city or district for all the countries can easily be found... But I really think we're talking for nothing, once more... :(

The problem with multiple spellings for locations, missing locations etc has been raised many times but, as you say, never seems to have been addressed from the centre. I had hoped that new ownership would improve that part of the site for the better, it seems not!

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, I know it's not the first time we're talking about this problem... You're right when you say that this will have no end, but as the admins aren't doing anything about this, I thought every bits could help :)

But I agree with you, a CLOSED LIST is a must have if we want to get rid of this problem. It's sad that so many people don't care about it and just spell names their own way, or invent something like 'on the way to ...'. I really hope the admins will do something about it. As you say, it's NOT difficult to make those lists, and it will leave all problems away. For people who don't know where their picture was taken, they still have the 'Unknown' option!

So let's cross fingers and hope this time someone will take care of it! ;) I know it's not the only problem here, but IMHO it's one of the most important ones...

Greetings,
Thomas

Finding such lists may be more difficult than you think.
At least for Finland I only found municipalities listed by province in Finnish Wikipedia pages, not on English ones.

Hi again,

I recently became location moderator, which means I can make changes in the locations where needed. Feel free to let me know wrong placed or wrong spelled locations so that I can fix them.

Greetings from Belgium,
ThomasL

@ ktanska: Yes I know it's not always as easy to find them, but I'm sure there's a book or site which offers an almost complete list of the cities.

Yes, that is true. Not to mention the fact that TE supports multiple languages, and the names are mostly different in every language. One possible source is http://www.unece.org/cefact/locode/service/main.htm. Click on the "more...." link for "Location Code list". I don't know how complete the list is, and I think it's only in English.

There might also be a list somewhere in http://unstats.un.org/unsd/geoinfo/default.htm, but I haven't found it yet.

By the way, the Location Code list shows the city or municipality. Subdivision Codes are the provinces or states. There's also a Download link.

Note that the primary purpose for these lists are for trade and transportation, so not all [small] towns might be listed.

Hope this helps.

Default Re: Locations: Gibraltar

Ok, here's one location I was wondering recently.

Correct: United Kingdom >> Other >> Gibraltar >> Gibraltar
Merge all other 'cities' under United Kingdom >> Other >> Gibraltar to it, as
in all fairness there is only one town over there.

Also Spain >> Andalucia >> Cadiz >> Gibraltar and
Germany >> West >> Bayern >> Gibraltar should be
United Kingdom >> Other >> Gibraltar >> Gibraltar
