Hi Jorge,
It seems you have a lot of sanctuaries of St Mary in Brazil, bigger and smaller. Also in POland we have a big number of them. Often the sculptures or painings are quite small like here so it is not easy to get closer to them and present them in detail.
Here you have well included a wider context with probably St Therese of Avila and St Francisco.
Lovley stylish ornaments around,
M

when brazil was colonized the catholic church was fighting against the Protestantism and the church was putting the image of mary more in evidence, because the protestants don't pay attention of her and this was a point of the catholic identity. at same time the crown of portugal after 1640, when portugal became independent of spain after some decades, the crown was gave to Saint Mary. ---- the portuguese kings never used a crown after that, Mary was in fact the queen of portugal. during a meeting of european kings in europe in 1900 or so, the other kings had their crowns in the head and the portuguese king had it above a pillow, because he was only the caregiver of it. take care jorge |

spain and portugal are (or were) very catholic. when brazil was being colonized the catholic church was facing a fight against that protestant ideas (from northern europe) and the jesuits used a lot the figure of mary as a symbol of catholicism, that is the reason there are many faith in mary in brazil and the whole latin america as in mexico, peru, colombia, etc.. portugal and spain were ever in fight but they were ever catholic. take care jorge |
