To SnapRJW: PP on Black & White portrait

  • Hi Rosemary,

Thanks so much, I am very happy for your appreciation of this shot. The silky skin tones I think can mostly be ascribed to the kind of light I was working with. I love to go out and do portraits on this kind of cloudy day as the clouds serve as natural diffuser and assures you of smooth skin tones.

Other than that, I pushed the contrast quite a bit.

One thing I often do when working with a lot of whites and dark colors together in a photo (similar to dodging and burning) is to develop the same photo once for the correct skin tone exposure and then a second darker copy for the very white colors (like some clothes and often the clouds). You have to use the camera raw function to be able to do that.

I then simply put the two layers over each other eg, put the lighter layer on top and then erase from the darker layer which parts you want to be lighter or vice versa.

    I think that's about it.
All the best to you Rosemary!
