A camera is only an extension of your eye

I have taken some excellent photographs on a canon compact

It really depends on what you want from a camera?

Do you want ease of use and portability without the need to fiddle with extra lenses and such?
Do you want to take photographs without being noticed so much etc etc

All these things need to be taken into account when choosing a camera

I still use my compact occasionally especially when i know if i whip out my DSLR i am going to be stopped and asked a lot of questions..

The quality of a DSLR in the format of the compact in Canos range is likely the G range all take excellent quality results in RAW as well as Jpeg
The G11 and the G10 are particularly good for this

There is no such thing a 'the best camera' irrespectivie of the maker. There are so many variables in what an individual want from the camera in the first place as to make such a definition impossible.

True - but still, I think there can be a camera that enables the photographer to do much more than the others. And I'll be damned if the best canon isn't the 5D Mark II. True - the higher ends might have bells and whistles. But golly - the 5D Mark II is lighter, usually has higher resolution, and is used in professional cinematography! How much more could you want from a contemporary camera?
