Great holmertz 2020-07-13 6:36

Hello Paul,
I visited the Water Village in Bandar Seri Begawan (and probably you did too), but I remember the wooden bridges as rather rickety, and many boards were missing, so I didn't quite enjoy it, because the water looked rather unhealthy. I wonder why these villages were built. Was there such a lack of space on the ground? Or was it a way to circumvent local laws, like when the British invented the houseboats in Kashmir?
It is in any case an exotic environment and another three interesting photos.
Best regards,

Default To holmertz: Protection

Thank you Gert,

I think houses on stilts provide safety and security in the event of flooding.
They also provide a protection against pests.

Also, the original inhabitants were often fishermen who lived close to the fishing grounds.

I haven't heard in Malaysia and Brunei that they tried to avoid taxes in this way.
But I may have missed something important ...

All the best !
