Problem with resizing pictures

I don't have any trouble getting the pictures down to 600x800 with my program, but the files are always around 260,000 bytes, and the maximum is 200,000. I don't want to make the picture any smaller, but it seems like I'll have to in order to get the correct file size, unless any of you have some tips to offer?

When you save a JPEG there's an option to adjust the quality setting, try adjusting this and see whether you can get a good compromise between image quality and filesize - it's usually possible :)

If you're sharpening beforehand, I suggest you only sharpen the areas that need to be sharpened - noisy images (and those with lots of fine detail) make JPEG files much larger...

Ok, so I usually sharpen the image a bit before I submit it. Is that what makes the file size bigger? I'm using Fuji's FinePix Viewer v.4.2.22 I really need to get photo shop, but just don't have the money.

try to get PS Elements, 2.0 (a bit older) or 3.0 - less expencive, but still with a lot of features, also for resizing.

Yes, I believe photoshop is a good solution. I'm using Photoshop 9 and i've had such problems, even when i do some post-prodution on photos.

Please check my answer to a similar question a few months ago.
The problem with Exif data appears to have been corrected since then.
Give it a try; this is definitely the best program for this kind of operation.

Sharpening will make it bigger, but as I've already mentioned - changing the JPEG quality is the best way to change your filesize. If FinePix Viewer can't change that, then find something that can!

You can download trial versions of Photoshop from the adobe website, or you could download TheGimp for nothing. It has most of the features found in Photoshop, but it does feel a bit unpolished at times.

If you just want something simple that can do basic resize/sharpen/JPEGquality, then I suggest you have a look at IrfanView - it's free, small and easy(ish) to use :)

I find it works well. Also has some basic editing, sharpening, etc functions. The price is sure right.
