The construction of the house was inititated at the beginning of the 20th century by a certain duke Czartoryski on the occasion of his marriage with a Hapsburg princess. It was designed to resemble 16th century great houses (the period of the greatest power of the Polish Republic) as a proper symbol of the summit of the Czartoryski family power, confirmed by the Hapsburg consort. The work reached the stage of a shell in 1914 when the First World War begun and stopped. The new econonomic conditions after the war did not enabled completing the construction so it was carried only as far as necessary to protect it from deterioration.

OH. MY. GOD!!! I'm so sorry not to have replied earlier! This is so embarrassing! It's so tough keeping up with replies etc. without any notifications. I hope TE comes up with something akin to Facebook that notifies comments and critiques.
Anyways, Thank you so much for the back-story. It was such a different place - Europe before the first world-war. I'm sure there are many more of such unfinished dreams lying in ruins across the continent. Thank you again for your story, and my sincere apologies for not responding sooner. |
