Well, as I access from notebook, my calibration possibilities are very limited. If you see on your photo tha man's coat with details and not only as completely black area, then I am sorry.

I learned this technique only recently and tried on approximately 20 photos. This one was by far the best result I achieved and exactly as you said: frequently I ended in "cartoon like"...
