Photographer's Note

The Bamiléké, originated from the north, settled West Province of Cameroon around the start of 17th century.
Under the chief, traditionally the judicial and religious leader and owner of all the land in the chiefdom, was a hierarchy of notables, freeman and slaves. Although this rigid social organisation has all but gone, various associations and secret societies relating to the chiefdom still remain today.
This is a traditional dance for chief birthday.
