Photographer's Note

HATTEM is another one of those small, but interesting Dutch towns that lie hidden in the interior of the country.

Hattem is one of a handful of "Hanzesteden" in the Netherlands. These cities belonged to the Hanzeatic League. This was a commercial and defensive confederation of trading towns in Northwestern and Central Europe. Hansa territories stretched from the Baltic to the North Sea and inland during the Late Middle Ages, and diminished slowly after 1450.

In the Netherlands several of these old Hanseatic towns now no longer border the sea, which makes them quaintly preserved and quite interesting to visit.

We cycled from Kampen via Zwolle to Hattem (and back), all three are former Hanze cities.

THIS PICTURE was shot in Hattem, just a small street, looking up, admiring light and shadows.
