Not so far from the Canary islands, and from the marvellous coasts of Senegal, lays the lovely archipelago of Cabo Verde…a land of music, poetry and, as an old local song says, of saudade, which in Portuguese stays for melancholy.

Cabo Verde is an unconventional place: its landscapes remind of an unspoiled planet more than a tropical archipelago as, except for the island of Sto Antao, it is just a desert archiplelago lost in the middle of the Atlantic, with sand, rocks and volcanoes.

Cape Verde was uninhabited when the Portuguese arrived in 1456, and the islands were thus made part of the Portuguese empire. Due to its location off the coast of Africa, Cape Verde became an important watering station, then sugar cane plantation site, and later a major center of the slave trade.

Cap-Vert, Barlaventos by Fanny Ab (317) 2004-02-25 - 2004-03-10

Chaque île du Cap-Vert, archipel perdu au large du Sénégal, est un petit monde en soi. Durant deux trop courtes semaines, j'ai eu l'occasion de découvrir les Barlaventos, ou les îles au vent - Sal, Sao Vicente, Santo Antao, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolao et Boavista. La population issue d'un métissage entre Africains et Portugais a créé une culture unique, loin de l'Europe mais pas vraiment africaine non plus. Je me réjouis de vous en faire découvrir un coin sur TE. (10 photos)
