| Intro: | I joined this fraternity just over TWO YEARS ago. I have always loved photography, an extension of my love of painting. I have participated long enough to appreciate the good things and to be bemused by the oddities of this fraternity. I never cease to be bewildered by how often a photo contributed by one of the founding contributors accrues a total of points and such adulation which are totally detached from the photo posted and its intrinsic, aesthetic worth. True, the long distance runners at TE,those who post regularly and write their critiques religiously, are to be lauded, but gratitude should not override reason. Meanwhile, the relative newcomers go practically unnoticed- no matter how worthy their efforts. And that dear folk is the major crack in this otherwise inspirational site. The other oddity is connected with the North/South antithesis. Spring in the northern hemisphere creates a euphoric chorus celebrating its beauty. In the southern half of our globe, it’s Autumn. How to become part of the northern focus with one’s autumn photograph, without appearing to be the odd person out? Another interesting quirk is the national/tribal/cultural reciprocity. Often a person of one nationality accrues a respectable number of compliments purely from his or her countrymen/women – the let us stick together club. So if one posts a photo from a country or region that has few members, guess what happens normally? Enough of the annoying aspects! The positives do outweigh the negatives. Often enough, one does come across a photo that takes one’s breath away. One also becomes an armchair traveller to the remotest parts of the world. And last but not the least, one forms friendships with people that one would have never met otherwise. To those individuals who have visited my gallery over the two years and whose helpful advice and inspirational work have made me more aware of my shortcomings (and in turn motivated me to improve) I thank you sincerely. It has been time well spent. | |
