Photographer's Note

Not many people in Eshkashim own cars. Heavy loads are transported using animals or, very often, people's backs or heads. Everyone who has been to any of the so-called "developing countries" knows it's not that unusual or specific to Afghanistan. Similar hard labour as in this photo from Bhutan or this one from Nepal. It's cheaper to break your own back than buy a donkey. You can only dream of getting a motor vehicle.

This man was resting on his way from Eshakshim to his village when I approached him and asked, with a gesture, if I could take a photo. It rarely happened (once actually) during my trip to Afghanistan that a man would refuse to pose for shot, not matter what the circumstances. Women always refused, but sometimes changed their minds later, having been talked into it by Azim. Some man and many kids asked for a photo before I even pulled my camera out of my rucksack. Have I mentioned before it was a photographer's paradise?
