Photographer's Note

Nieul-le-Virouil is a sleepy village in the Charente Maritime département of South-West France.

With a population of 575 (2008) it boasts a church, a mairie (town hall) and a part time post office.

At one time it had quite a large number of commerces, including a butcher, a baker, a hairdresser and a local bar. These have long since disappeared as as happened in many other small rural communities in France, a process known in French as désertification.
