Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

This is one of my favourite photographs from Montepulciano for it seems to combine the particular, the historical and the atmosphere. It was taken in the Piazza Grande.

The particular, in the f/g, is the ancient well called Il Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni. It is a glorified water well that is topped by an architrave that is accented by the lions holding a crest with the Medici family symbol on one side the iris of Florence on the other. It is further decorated with the griffin symbol. In my photograph, you can see the ancient mechanism for drawing the water. I will add a w/s showing the well more fully here .

The historical is the ancient buildings in the b/g, the main one being the town hall, built as a competitor to the buildings in Florence. You can see a side view of the town hall here .

The atmosphere was one of leisurely sociability. There were lots of people enjoying the sunshine, taking a drink in the open-air cafe or looking wide-eyed at the buildings. You can see how many cyclists were present, understandable because of the narrowness of the streets for four wheeled vehicles but surprising when you consider the extreme steepness of most of the streets.

Enjoy your Sunday, Bev :-)
